Abstract. The paper examines the interaction between higher education institutions and primary schools as an important condition for developing the professional competence of future teachers. Attention is focused on the need to move from episodic cooperation, mainly connected with teaching practice, to systematic partnership between universities and schools. The possibilities of joint educational design, mentoring, analysis of pedagogical situations, practice-oriented classes, professional reflection and the involvement of practising teachers in teacher education are outlined. It is substantiated that such cooperation helps bridge the gap between theoretical preparation and real pedagogical practice, develops future teachers’ readiness to act in specific educational situations, interact with pupils, parents and colleagues, and make responsible professional decisions.
